This accredited online course provides a comprehensive introduction to healing garden design. It looks at ways in which a garden can be designed to create healing and harmony in our lives, contributing to emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being.
The healing garden offers a link with the natural world that can soothe a flagging spirit and rebuild our social, spiritual, physical and emotional well-being.In the garden we are connected to the world around us - the soil, plants, animals, water and wind. Whether a rolling rural expanse or a small urban oasis, the garden can be a place of personal rejuvenation and an escape from the stress of everyday life.
Subjects covered include: planning and design of the healing garden; the multi-sensory garden; creating a sensory trail; healing through colour; herbs and their healing properties; creating a herb garden; using healing plants indoors; harmony and healing in garden design; aromatherapy in the garden; essential oils and plant extracts.
On successful completion of the course students are awarded an Edinburgh Garden School certificate of Course Completion. Edinburgh Garden School is part of Borders Connect, accredited by the ODLQC and registered as a training provider with the Online Learning Council. Module 2: The Sensory Garden - accessibility and safety; creating a garden for children; working with older people; what is a sensory garden; creating a ‘sense of place’ within the garden; colour theory; engaging the senses in garden design; a sensory trail; wildlife gardening - creating a wildlife pond, grasses and meadows, woodland edge; legal issues in garden design.
Module 3: Plants and Garden Activities - structure and biology of plants; science of essential oils; uses of essential oils, planning horticultural therapy activities in the garden; example activities; garden activities for children; explore safety aspects in public gardens.
Module 4: History of Healing Gardens 1 - the earliest gardens; ancient gardens - Persian paradise gardens; Egyptian gardens; Roman gardens; Medieval gardens.
Module 5: History of Healing Gardens 2 - development of the Renaissance garden; early history of hospital gardens; Victorian and Edwardian garden design and healing gardens; recent history of hospital gardens; modern landscape design and healing spaces.
Module 6: Eastern Design Influences - history of Japanese and Chinese garden design; Zen gardens; healing spaces and meditation; Feng Shui principles; therapeutic garden design.
