Creating Pot Pourri

This activity offers a wonderful sensory experience for participants as they are immersed in the scents and textures of the pot pourri materials. It is a good way of using flowerheads that you have previously harvested and dried.

Benefits:

Develops fine motor skills; promotes social interaction; offers sensory stimulation and a sense of accomplishment.

Materials required:

  • gloves
  • 1 litre (2pt) dried flowers, leaves, roots or seeds
  • fixative (see recipes below)
  • essential oil
  • wooden spoon
  • small bowl
  • large bowl for mixing
  • airtight storage container.

Directions:

  1. Place fixatives, such as orris root powder or ground gum benzoin, and any powdered spices in a small bowl. Add essential oils and rub the mix between your fingers until it is well-blended. Gloves should be worn.
  2. Blend the remaining dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
  3. Add the fixatives and essential oils and stir the mixture well using a wooden spoon.
  4. Store the mixture in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag for 4 – 6 weeks.
